DESCRIPTION:Fall is almost here and the bees are busy to prepare for winter: \n\nWhat is special about winter bees?\nHow much food do my bees have\, how much should I feed them\, when and how long for?\nShould my bees overwinter in one or two boxes?\nHow do I protect my bees from uninvited overwintering guests?\nHow do I protect my hives from robbery?\nScreen bottom or solid bottom?\n\nLet’s discuss and have a look into three hives. \nThe first one was very strong\, but after a mite treatment the colony lost its queen and recently made a new one. They were very weak. Let’s figure out how they do. \nThe second hive is a split and does really well. This hive is to compare the weak one with\, if needed. \nThe third hive was borderline with its mite population. We will do an inspection and a mite check to count mites and decide if and how to treat them.

DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting is set for Saturday\, November 16th\, from 10:30am to noon. We plan to talk about important preparations for getting your hives ready for the winter.  We will focus on the key elements: food stores\, ventilation\, varroa mite treatment and insulation. \nWhere:  Rainbeau Ridge\, 49 David’s Way\, Bedford Hills (please park on the farm’s side of the street if there is no more room in the farm’s driveway). \nWhat: We will talk about food stores and honey location within the hive\, do an oxalic acid treatment for pre-winter varroa mite control\, set up the hive’s ventilation/moisture control and place a wind break behind the hives. \nNote: There are several methods that people prefer to use over the winter\, so please share the methods that work for you when you join us! \nIn the meantime\, we hope that you are assessing the health of your hives and ensuring you have a good population and good food stores for your honeybees.  (Consider combining hives that are disease-free but perhaps small and feed the hives that are low on food.)
