SUMMARY:2019 | November Meeting\, Winter Hive Prep
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting is set for Saturday\, November 16th\, from 10:30am to noon. We plan to talk about important preparations for getting your hives ready for the winter.  We will focus on the key elements: food stores\, ventilation\, varroa mite treatment and insulation. \nWhere:  Rainbeau Ridge\, 49 David’s Way\, Bedford Hills (please park on the farm’s side of the street if there is no more room in the farm’s driveway). \nWhat: We will talk about food stores and honey location within the hive\, do an oxalic acid treatment for pre-winter varroa mite control\, set up the hive’s ventilation/moisture control and place a wind break behind the hives. \nNote: There are several methods that people prefer to use over the winter\, so please share the methods that work for you when you join us! \nIn the meantime\, we hope that you are assessing the health of your hives and ensuring you have a good population and good food stores for your honeybees.  (Consider combining hives that are disease-free but perhaps small and feed the hives that are low on food.)

SUMMARY:March Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for what is sure to be a fascinating talk (as well as Q&A opportunity) with leading honeybee researcher\, Jon Snow of Barnard. \n“Housewarming: Thermoregulation in Honey Bee Colonies” \nThe honey bee colony has often been called a “superorganism”\, because the individual bees cannot survive by themselves for extended periods and work together like a single organism to address the needs of the community. One of the key needs of the colony is to maintain a constant temperature in the hive through thermoregulation\, or the ability of an organism to keep its body temperature within certain boundaries\, even when the surrounding temperature is very different. Honeybee colonies use coordinated behaviors in which the individuals play specific roles in regulating temperature in a hive. In maintaining this colony temperature\, individual honey bees undergo extreme heat stresses. We have evidence that normal stresses\, such as those caused by thermoregulation\, synergize with atypical stresses such as those thought to be important in causing the recent decline in honey bees\, known as colony collapse disorder. Current work is aimed at increasing our knowledge of how cooperation of stresses affects the health and disease of these critical pollinators. \nJon’s Bio: \nJonathan Snow joined the Barnard faculty in 2012 after serving as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Williams College.  Dr. Snow received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of California\, San Francisco\, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Children’s Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School. His graduate and postgraduate work focused on signal transduction\, regulation of gene expression\, and organismal stress responses in blood development of mammals. He subsequently became fascinated with the honey bee and changed his research focus to the study of these same biological processes in this key pollinator. He continues his avocation as a bee-keeper while teaching and maintaining an active research laboratory.

SUMMARY:November 19th "Hour of Decision" Film
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday\, November 19th\, from 10:30am until noon\, for our next Hudson Valley Natural Beeekeepers meeting. \nWe are very excited to be showing the film\, “Hour of Decision”. \nThis film was made by Gunther Hauk of Spikenard Farm. \n\nThe Hour of Decision shares the deep insight and wisdom of a beekeeper who is devoting his life towards saving the honeybee.  This film emphasizes the need to change our ways in order to effectively address the honeybee crisis.\nIt is only by broadening our understanding and knowledge of the honeybee that we can learn to develop the right attitude and methods for sustainable beekeeping.\nThis in-depth exploration of the honeybee offers great inspiration for what we can do to help her.
